The Hastings Farmers' Market is a proud initiative of the Hastings Economic Development Board in partnership with Hastings Council and the horticultural producers of the Hastings region.

By providing an opportunity for local farmers to sell a large variety of fruit, vegetables and farm products directly to the community, Hastings Council supports local producers and helps preserve a valuable community resource based for the future.

Council believes that the open market place provides the most beneficial means of exchange between farmers and residents.

Who can sell at the Farmers' Market?
Only growers and producers from within the Hastings LGA can sell at the Hastings Farmers' Market. Products are required to be grown, reared, caught, baked, processed or value added by the vendor?

What about products from outside of the Hastings region?
Products from outside of the Hastings region will only be considered if they fill gaps in locally available products and services at the discretion of the Farmers' Market Taskforce. Hastings Council has resolved that a maximum of six (6) non-Hastings vendors will be allowed at any single market. Non-local vendors shall be reviewed prior to each market and where all else is equal, preference will be given to Hastings Producers.

What products may be sold at the Farmers' Market?
The Hastings Farmers' Market acts as a direct marketing outlet for Hastings produce.
Fruit and vegetables must be freshly harvested and well cared for to maintain the high standard of the Farmers' Market.
Processed or prepared foods are required to be made in the Hastings for commercial purposes from local agricultural/horticultural produce.

How are rules enforced?
Hastings Council officers and staff attend all Farmers' Market. In addition, a food safety audit is undertaken in accordance with the appropriate food standards.
The Farmers' Market Co-ordinator has authority to ask vendors to remove sub-standard or non-Hastings produce from sale.

How many growers participate?
Around 60 growers and producers are in attendance at the Farmers' Market.

How is the Farmers' Market supported?
The Hastings Farmers' Market is operated on a cost recovery basis by Hastings Council. Vendors are required to pay a small fee to obtain their stall space at every Market.
Assistance, grants and contributions are gratefully received from individuals and companies.
